Don't Worry About Tomorrow

“So don’t be anxious about tomorrow. God will take care of your tomorrow too. Live one day at a time.” Matthew 6:34

Do you live each day as it comes? Or do live from one event to another?
Do you have multiple calendars to keep up with your schedule, your spouse’s schedule and your children’s activities? Do you simply travel through time from work to ball-game to cheerleading practice to music lesson to soccer practice and back to work again?
Do you fall into bed already worried about all you have to do tomorrow, next week, next month? Do you ever get the feeling that with all the running around, you haven’t actually LIVED each day?

God wants us to live a day at a time. That doesn’t mean we can’t make plans and keep to a schedule. God simply doesn’t want us so preoccupied with our plans that we forget to live our lives fully each day. We stay closer to him when we stay conscious and aware of each moment of our day. We experience God more in our lives when we live in the moment. But, how do you do that?

It may be as simple as focusing on your five senses at least a couple of times a day. That may sound easy, but with all of life’s distractions, it’s not easy for most of us. Still, it can be learned.

Try it right now. Stop thinking about your schedule and focus on your senses. What do you see right now? Is the light harsh or soft? Do you see nature or the square lines of an office? Do you see other people? What are they doing?

What do you hear? Do you hear music, the hum of a computer, traffic out on the highway or perhaps supper simmering on the stove? Are the sounds you are hearing pleasant or bothersome?

What do you smell right now? Do you smell someone’s perfume? Do you smell coffee? Can you smell fresh air coming in an open window? Notice it and all its nuances.

What do you taste? Do you taste Juicy Fruit gum? The onion you had on your hamburger? Your minty toothpaste?

What do you feel? Are you comfortable? Are your feet cold? Are you hot? Are your clothes scratchy? Are you sitting on a soft chair or a hard bench? Do you feel the need to stretch and yawn?

In the few minutes you’ve spent in complete awareness of your senses, you’ve been completely alive and undistracted by your to-do list. You have truly lived in the moment. What a gift from God life is when we stop long enough to see, hear, smell and taste it. What a miracle we are as His creation.

Today, begin to make a habit of pausing several times a day and becoming aware of what your senses are telling you about yourself and God’s wonderful creation. And pray that He will help you to stop spinning unconsciously through your life.
